John D. Cogan
John D. Cogan is an award-winning American painter, recognized for his awe-inspiring landscapes of the American Southwest. Working almost exclusively in acrylic on canvas or panel, Cogan captures creation’s splendor with his unique application of thin under-painting, thicker finishes, rich pigments, glazes, and scumbles. Cogan’s attention to detail and emphasis on color and light produce exquisite masterpieces, celebrating the beauty of the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, Zion National Park, as well as the Grand Canyon.
Cogan has participated in numerous One Man Shows and invitational competitions throughout the United States, including the Modern Masters Show at the Grand Canyon’s historic Kolb Studio. Since 2009, Cogan has participated in the Grand Canyon Association’s Plein Air on the Rim, where Cogan won Best of Show (2015) and First Place Plein Air (2011) at the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art. In 2012 Cogan’s painting, “Out of the Depths,” won the Jack Dudley Memorial Purchase Award and is a permanent part of the Grand Canyon collection.
In addition, Cogan has participated in the Zion National Park’s Plein Air Invitational since 2010, winning not only the Superintendent’s Award (2011, 2017), but also the Foundation Award (2015), and the Zion National History Foundation Award (2015). Cogan’s painting, “Waters of Evening,” was selected as the poster painting in 2016 and his work was featured in the Zion National Park chapter of Art of the National Parks (2013). In addition, Cogan was a four-time Finalist for the prestigious Art Renewal Center Salon.
Cogan’s work has been featured in national magazines including, Plein Air Magazine, Art of the West, Southwest Art, American Art Collector, Sedona Monthly, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Art, Workshop Magazine, and The Majesty of the Grand Canyon. His paintings belong to the permanent collections of Forbes, Conoco Phillips, Citizens Bank, Raymond James Financial, San Juan College, Eastern New Mexico University, Raymond James Financial, Xanterra, Zion National Park, Aztec Museum, Bernalillo County Courthouse, and McGraw Hill.
